Arcane Genius

Descended from doppelgangers and mimics, the Arcane Genius is a keen observer and imitator of the world around them. Difficult to instruct but eager to learn, the Genius may thrive beyond any other on their own or wither and starve without access to training that makes sense to them.

Stats

After level 1, you stop learning spells according to the normal Sorcerer's progression.

You may no longer trade spells as normal at level up. Instead, as you level up you may forget up to one spell and then complete any spells you have at 99% learned rate. You cannot exceed your spells known for your new level this way.

Instead you learn spells through Genius Insight and Genius Research. You may learn spells that you cannot yet cast. You can cast spells of levels equal to half your sorcerer level, rounded up.

Genius Insight

The first time each day that you observe any spell being cast which you do not already know or have at 99% learned rate, record that spell on your character sheet with a 10% learning rate, or add 10% to its learning rate if it is already there. Spells learned this way are Sorcerer spells for you.

If completing a spell this way would put you over the number of spells you may know at your level, you may leave the spell unknown at 99%.

Genius Research

Starting at level 6, an Arcane Genius may make progress through independent research in the absence of novel study material. once per day, the Genius may increase one incompletely learned spell on their sheet by 5%.

If completing a spell this way would put you over the number of spells you may know at your level, you may leave the spell unknown at 99%.

Improvisational Genius

Beginning at level 14, whenever the Arcane Genius uses one or more metamagic features they may also roll a d6. On a 6, the Spell Point cost of the metamagic feature is refunded.

Instant Repeat

Beginning at level 18, the Genius becomes a master of mimicry and may imitate spells and spell-like abilities. Once per turn, as an action, you may spend a number of spell points equal to the level of the most recent spell or spell-like ability you've witnessed.

You cast a copy of that spell or ability as a Sorcerer spell.
