Mobbes

Homebrew race for D&D 5th edition by Dick Jarvis

Brodan turned to begin unloading the melons, almost bowling over the tiny creature that stood behind him. He looked down at the ball of dust and fuzz, which craned it’s neck to look at Bordan,.Two large glowing eyes studying the laborer.
Brodan’s gruff voice was slow to start “Uhm.. C-can I help you?”
The creature grinned “Yus! I am Bugge Leaflitter Bee-feeler who Drinks Deep of the Cup of Life! I notice ye are the pilot of this fine Arcanomobile!”
Brodan slowly nodded.
“They would have much use of my adventuring services in the capital, I am sure, and I was wondering; should I assist with these exquisite melons, you would in turn deliver my person to the adventuring guild, yus?”
Brodan imagined a world where he refused Leaflitter’s polite request, and the guilt began to rush his senses. He agreed to the small creature’s terms. Leaflitter was not much use, only able to unload one melon at a time; he carried them one-by-one to the market like pieces of furniture, and had to take frequent breaks to catch his breath.
On their way to the capital, Brodan was quiet. He looked down to see how his passenger was faring. Leaflitter was beaming out the window at the passing landscape, his tiny legs swinging over the plush seats. It reminded Brodan of a small child, and he began laughing. Leaflitter joined in the laughter. Their laughter together turned into singing, stories, and boasting that lasted for the remainder of the trip.

Springing from the tangle of the Feywilds, Mobbes are small, lively creatures who have a thirst for adventure. They delight in new experiences, and set out into the material plane to see what the world has to offer. Outsiders find them quaint, or strange, and seldom take them or their society very seriously.

Court of the Mossy Stone

Mobbes comprise a small, forgotten court which lies deep within the Feywilds. They are the lords (or Lortes) of the leaf litter and crawling things. The Court of Mossy Stone values craft and artistry, with a few Mobbes leaving their forest home to answer the call of adventure.

Chivalrous Adventurers

Mobbes who are raised on stories of dashing adventurers and noble heroes leave the feywilds with a very specific vision of what an adventurer should be; Polite, daring, and gallant. Seeing a tiny Mobbe act like a chivalrous knight is often amusing for outsiders, but a Mobbe adventurer is dead-serious about their role in society. Villains beware: many a bandit’s last moments were spent laughing at the bravado of a Mobbe adventurer.

Delight in the New

Mobbes live to experience new things, which is what drives their adventuring travels. They rarely say ‘no’ to new opportunities, and dive deep into the local culture. They often keep large leatherbound journals or scrapbooks, chronicles of their tourism. They seem to find joy in even the most mundane experiences; so long as it’s new to them, they collect it as a story to return home with.

Mobbe Names

Mobbes have four parts to their names; A title prefixing their name, a first name which is used informally, a formal surname associated with their family, all followed by a flourish name; a fluid descriptor they can use to give their name some descriptive flourish when introducing themselves.

Mobbe first names are often elemental, but they are sometimes named after animals or plants; they can be named after archfey, adventurers, or even items used in their family’s trade.

Their surnames are traditionally insect-themed, as insects are closely tied to the Mossy Stone Court. Common Mobbes usually just adopt the name of an insect plainly, while families who reside higher in the court have more complex, descriptive, or poetic surnames.

Their final descriptive name can change as they adventure and collect new experiences - it is meant to be used in introductions, to help give a (mostly) accurate impression of their personality.

Mobbe Titles: The titles they use are unique to Mossy Stone;

  • Yitte (Yt.) - Used for the average Mobbe citizen
  • Bugge (Bg.) - A formal title for Adventurers.
  • Peepe (Pp.) - A higher member of the court, reserved for recognized Artisans or lesser Nobility
  • Grubbe (Grb.) - Used for Judges of the Mossy Stone court.
  • Lorte (Lrt.) - A title exclusive to Royal Nobility.
