Nerul was the god of death, slain by Avandra and The Raven Queen. Somewhere deep in Unreality a dull memory of Nerull festers, searching for cracks in Reality through which to return.

Where fear of death permeates people's lives, prevents people from blossoming, and drives people to be cruel is where Nerull gains power. Where a lust for murder takes hold he has already risen. He reaches out to vulnerable mortals and coaxes them to terrible acts, always trying to move closer to a world that is ready for his full scale return.
