Garl Glittergold
Lawful Good god of Ingenuity, Luck, Protection, and Trickery.
The leader among the gnome deities, worshipped in small numbers across many races.
Patron of Gnomes.
Well known on Prasinos among gnomes and halflings.
Personality
Garl values fair play and taking an honest gamble, but also wit and ingenuity. His favorites among mortals are those who make clever plays to turn the odds in their own favor without resorting to outright lying, cheating, or betrayal. His followers have closely held beliefs about things like the differences between lying and bluffing, a betrayal and a clever misdirect, or a plot and a prank.
Those who seek his favor must have a keen sense of where those lines lie, in his opinion.
History
Garl is one of the youngest cosmic gods, having begun life as a mortal gnome on Prasinos around 5070 BNE. In life he was a champion among gnomes, renowned for his wit, luck and above all else a glowing and generous spirit that sought to include all in his merriment.
It was said that to lose to Garl in a game of chance was no loss at all; win or lose he had a way of making any gamble thrilling and every joke hilarious.
According to legend, when Garl was beginning to grow old, Nerull grew frustrated from his numerous failed attempts to lead Garl to a terrible and early death and confronted him directly.
The dread god of death, who ruled his domain with murder, terror and violence, hooked Garl's leg in his scythe as he skipped down a wooded path. He demanded to know how Garl had evaded the many horrible fates Nerull had set in his path.
Hung upside down by his foot, face to face with the skeletal avatar of murder Garl smiled and told him “I have a trick that keeps debtors away, and it's so clever it even works on you!”
Nerull's eyes burned with murder as he waited silently for Garl to explain himself. “Well, every day the first thing I do is step out of bed with my left foot. And whenever I enter a new place I always step left foot first.”
“And you see, you can never find me where you look for me.”
Nerull shook him hard and demanded “That is nonsense! Tell me why it is so!”
“Well. No matter where you look for me, I've already left!”
According to his followers, the absurdity of Garl's response struck Nerull with such force that the cruel god of violent murder laughed an honest laugh for the first and last time; and with that he turned away from Garl, never to bother him again.
